AWNA Photographic Awards
As part of a long-standing tradition of recognizing photographic excellence among Alberta's weekly newspapers, we encourage submission(s) of your best entries into any of the categories listed below.
- All entries should be submitted as JPGS, except for Multi-photo entries, where we want to see the full page(s) layout as they appeared in print. For this category please upload PDF of the page(s)
- Crop your JPGs to the same shape/dimensions as it appeared in print. This is really important. You want to show the judge what you showed your readers. It can make a big difference in the impact of your photo.
- Save your JPG no larger than 150ppi 8″x10″ or
- Include your cutline on the entry form, and any additional information you feel provides context to the photo.
- DO NOT ENTER THE SAME PHOTO IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY
Deadline: January 31, 2022
Visit kutd.awna.com/bnc for all the details on how to enter |
Categories - You may enter two (2) photos per category
Human Interest (HI)
- A picture of a ‘found’ situation that has a strong human or people element and/or a fresh view of an everyday scene.
- A sports feature picture may also be considered for this category ie. a sports-related picture other than game action that has a strong human interest.
- PLEASE NOTE: Two categories, Human Interest and Feature have the potential to overlap into other categories such as Sports or Spot News. The key to determining which category best fits is perhaps to answer the question, “What is the story you’re trying to tell?” i.e., Smith, of the home team, scored the winning goal OR Smith’s expression reflects the thrill of winning in sports. Please DO NOT enter the same photo in a second category.
- Another measure of the appropriate category when submitting entries is the page or location of the picture in the paper. This will usually confirm a conscious or subconscious decision on what category the picture falls into, in the mind of the editor.
Feature (FE)
- A picture with compelling and pleasing aesthetic qualities in regards to composition and graphic elements
