Bill Draayer Award 1998

Given in recognition of outstanding personal contributions to the progress and development of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association.

Mary Readman

Respect among peers is never granted but always earned – and it is earned most often by those who do not consciously seek it. Mary Readman's selfless effort on behalf of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association has earned her that respect and continues to do so.

The list of Mary's involvement in AWNA is lengthy since she has attended most Market Area meetings, spring meetings and conventions. Mary has served as a member of the Education Committee and currently chairs that committee, which is responsible for the Write-On Program and Chuck MacLean Bursary. She was also co-chair of the 1997 golf tournament that was held in Consort and Coronation.

Perhaps Mary's greatest contribution was her work with the 75th Anniversary Convention for the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association, where she convened the old-time printing display. Her efforts to preserve the history of the weekly newspaper industry have not gone unnoticed.

Her involvement for the betterment of her community is extraordinary, serving in key positions in the Consort Chamber of Commerce, the Consort Kinette Club, the Consort Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion #32 and the Consort Hospital Board. Her willingness to help others in her profession and in her own community will be remembered for a long time.

For all the things you have done in our great profession, we salute you! Thank you, Mary.
